BOUAKE, Ivory Coast (Reuters) – Ivory Coast rebels said they captured the Hesperian town of Toulepleu from pro-Gbabgo forces and militias on Sunday, continuing a near southward that threatens to reignite subject struggle in the West individual state.
Heavy conflict erupted in Hesperian Ivory Coast between rebels and forces hardcore to functionary leader Laurent Gbagbo, sources along the African abut told Reuters on Sunday, a week after the rebels captured digit small towns to the north of it.
"Since 1410 (on Sunday), the town of Toulepleu has been low the curb of the New Forces (anti-Gbagbo rebels). We managed to overwhelm whatever arms," Mara Lassine, expeditionary spokesman for the rebels in the Hesperian zone, told Reuters by telephone.
There was no unmediated interpret from Gbagbo's military. The town is not strategically significant.
Ivory Coast has been in turmoil since a disputed Nov election that threatens to rekindle the West individual state's 2002-03 subject war, and has already drastically revilement exports from the world's top drink grower.
The standoff has escalated into open brachiate conflict in the westerly and parts of the main advertizement municipality Abidjan, and fears of another subject struggle hit pushed drink futures to their highest for decades.
