BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) – A African protest spokesman said Muammar Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte had been captured by the rebels on Monday, but no independent verification of the evidence was immediately available.
A external writer in Sirte, contacted by telephone by Reuters, said the municipality was quiet.
"It's addicted Sirte has fallen into pro-democracy hands," said the protest spokesman, Shamsiddin Abdulmolah.
He said the rebels had not visaged such status from pro-Gaddafi forces.
