WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States urged Soudan on weekday to withdraw its forces from the flashpoint town of Abyei and warned their proximity would threaten US efforts to change ties with Khartoum.
Princeton Lyman, the US diplomatist for Sudan, said the "occupation" of Abyei by Federal personnel was "an extremely disproportional salutation by the polity of Sudan" to an attack on a UN convoy escorting the personnel last week.
"We think those (northern) forces should be withdrawn," Lyman told reporters as Abyei was aflame with gunmen pillaging properties after its getting by Federal troops.
Abyei's capture, in the run-up to planetary acceptance of gray independence in July, has been confiscated by the concern powers as a threat to pact between northerly and southward Sudan.
Soon-to-be autarkical southward Soudan also claims Abyei district, which has a primary position under a 2005 pact care that ended 22 eld of civil war, and has titled the activity "illegal."
Lyman deplored the "very earnest ravishment of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement," a 2005 deal.
"It sure jeopardizes the impact of negotiation that has been current to resolve the remaining issues before the southward becomes autarkical on July 9," he said.
In a Jan referendum that scarred the centerpiece of the pact agreement, mainly non-Muslim and individual gray Sudanese overwhelmingly voted to part from the Arab and Islamic polity in Khartoum.
A nonconvergent referendum was to hit condemned place in Abyei, but northerly and southward disputed voter eligibility in a border region split between the southern-backed Nilotic Ngok grouping and northern-supported Misseriya Arab kine herders.
Lyman said Misseriya grouping hit been seen in Abyei since Federal forces captured the town, but additional it was early to undergo whether they intend to settle there.
Lyman said the activity of Abyei would "complicate" US efforts to change relations with the polity of Soudan in the north.
"We had started the process, as you know, of looking at how to verify them soured the list of land sponsors of terrorism," Lyman said.
He said Washington was employed with the World Bank on whether to relieve Sudan's debt, estimated at $38 billion, and was considering denotive a full diplomatist in Khartoum after July 9.
"All of these are important steps of normalization. They can't be fulfilled if we don't hit a flourishing CPA... If we don't hit Abyei being negotiated, rather than occupied, it'll be hornlike to advise nervy on those items," he added.
Sudan was designated as a land advocator of terror in 1993 because of its questionable course to planetary violent immoderate groups.
Countries on the listing are not eligible for dweller assistance or for US arms purchases, and bilateral change is restricted.
The United States has posted a charge d'affaires in Khartoum since it distant its diplomatist there in 1998 mass bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
