Cuba criticizes ruling in ex-CIA agent's case (AP)

HAVANA – A crowning state authorised denounced on Saturday a Texas jury's acquittal of a time CIA agent as a "shameful farce" that showed both the defendant and the U.S. polity are liars.

In a telephone discourse with The Associated Press, state Parliament Chief economist Alarcon was highly grave of the federal judge presiding over the three-month trial, Kathleen Cardone, saying she did not earmark jurors to see evidence that would hit persuaded them to encounter Posada guilty.

"The stupid and shameful dressing is over," Alarcon said of the effort into allegations Posada lied during U.S. migration hearings. "There were things the jury did not undergo ... particularly since the judge prohibited them from being told."

Posada, 83, worked for decades to modify communist governments throughout dweller USA and was ofttimes supported by Washington. He is Public Enemy No. 1 in Cuba, where he is believed to hit been behind a series of hotel bombings that killed an European traveler and injured most 12 another grouping in 1997.

Posada's questionable status in those attacks was central to the effort in El Paso, Texas, which wrapped up Friday with a not-guilty verdict. Posada was not charged direct with the attacks, but rather with misrepresentaation most his role in an migration chance after he sneaked into the U.S. in 2005 and wanted political asylum.

Posada said in a 1998 discourse with The New royalty Times that he planned the bombings, but later recanted. During the trial, jurors heard more than digit hours of recordings from those interviews, but ostensibly were not swayed.

Posada also participated in the doomed Bay of Pigs invasion, served as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was a CIA functioning until 1976. He then touched to Venezuela and served as nous of that country's info service.

He was inactive for thinking the 1976 onslaught of a state airliner that killed 73 people, but was guiltless by a Venezuelan military tribunal, then free from situation patch still covering a civilian trial.

Posada helped the U.S. conoid support to Nicaraguan Contra rebels in the 1980s, and, in 2000, was inactive in Panama amid a strategy to kill then-Cuban President Fidel socialist during a summit there. He was pardoned by Panama's chair in 2004 and overturned up in the U.S. the mass March.

Cuba has daylong demanded pedagogue verify state against Posada for his past, not meet for the lesser crime of misrepresentaation to migration officers, a point Alarcon prefabricated again Saturday.

"The U.S. polity is as much a cheater as he is because it regenerate an assassin who has been wanted for decades into a ultimate old liar," he said.

Some observers conceive the finding in Posada's housing module not be beatific programme for Alan Gross, a U.S. polity subcontractor sentenced last period to 15 years in situation for transfer subject equipment into state illicitly patch employed on a USAID-funded ism program.

The U.S. polity has demanded his immediate release, and Gross' family and others hit pleaded with state to permit the 61-year-old Colony autochthonous go free on humanitarian grounds. U.S. officials hit said privately that they hit conventional signals from the state polity that Gross would ultimately be freed, but hopes dimmed somewhat after time U.S. President Jimmy Carter visited the island last period — only to leave empty-handed.

Alarcon said the digit cases hit nothing to do with apiece other, and insisted the Texas jury's finding would hit no bearing on Cuba's direction of the Gross case.

"These are completely crisp and separate things," Alarcon said. "We don't act same that. When we criminate someone, we are doing it because we hit grounds and we are not making it up. We don't criminate someone of being a cheater or a intense person. We criminate them of having violated state law."
