China dissident: Former Taiwan gov't gave me money (AP)

TAIPEI, island – A striking Asiatic contestant says Taiwan's previous polity gave him money to encourage democracy in his homeland.

Wang Dan says past President Chen Shui-bian "offered business support to China's egalitarian movement" on behalf of Taiwan's government. But he denies early reports that the cash came from the pockets of the island's disgraced president.

The U.S.-based Wang was digit of the leaders of the 1989 oppose movement in China that ended when section forces killed hundreds and possibly thousands of protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

His comments were published weekday in the Apple Daily newspaper.
