LONDON – A past Taleban fighter manned an Islamic bookstall trying to study up recruits for warfare in Afghanistan, a British functionary alleged Thursday.
Andrew Edis said Pakistani-born Munir Farooqi, 54, was digit of individual extremists who manned the bookstall in the Federal arts city of metropolis in the wish of enrolling blessed warriors to their cause.
"This was an organized attempt attractive place in metropolis to improve men for the jihad, to enlist fighters," Edis told a commission at metropolis Crown Court. He said that meant persuading grouping "that their religious duty requires them to fight, to kill, and to die."
Edis said the recruits would be expected to listen "training camps and battlefields abroad, principally in Afghanistan," and that, as a Taleban veteran, Farooqi would hit had the "know how and contacts" to get selection fighters to the area.
But Edis said Farooqi's efforts foundered when digit of his recruits turned out to be undercover policemen.
The men, identified only by the pseudonyms Ray and Simon, approached Farooqi in Oct 2008, pretending to be at a low ebb in their lives and interested in Islam. The officers secretly transcribed him as he, his 27-year-old son Harris, and digit others — British Islamic modify Gospels Newton, 29, and past youngness offender Israr Malik, 22 — attempted to radicalize them, Edis said.
The men were still inactive in a counterterrorism operation on Nov 16, 2009.
All four contain the charges existence leveled against them, but hit still to inform their case.
